Estimating wildlife strike costs at US airports: A machine learning approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Current lower bound estimates of the economic burden wildlife strikes make use mean cost assignment to impute missing values in National Wildlife Strike Database (NWSD). The accuracy these estimates, however, are undermined by skewed nature reported data and fail account for differences observed strike characteristics—e.g., type aircraft, size damage, animal struck, etc. This paper makes modern machine learning techniques provide a more accurate measure strike-related costs that accrue US civil aviation industry. We estimate costed industry minimum average $54.3 million total losses annually over 1990–2018 period. If one assumes were underreported as much factor 3 same period, our still fall below previous estimates.

A Protocol for Bird Strike Risk Assessment at Airports
In order for airports to manage the bird strike risk effectively, a risk assessment process needs to be carried out to identify the major hazards at the airport, the levels of risk that they produce, and the most cost effective means of reducing that risk. Despite the fact that bird controllers, managers and consultants make informal bird strike risk assessments throughout their working lives, ...
متن کاملGIS and Wildlife Management Activities at Airports
Wildlife observations collected over time at a US Air Force Base (AFB) have been visually displayed through Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. By continuing to expand upon the capabilities of GIS, USDA Wildlife Services has been able to manage the Seymour Johnson AFB airfield and surrounding areas in a practical manner. A Wildlife Hazard Assessment of the AFB used GIS to clearly di...
متن کاملWildlife Strike Risk Assessment in Several Italian Airports: Lessons from BRI and a New Methodology Implementation
The presence of wildlife in airport areas poses substantial hazards to aviation. Wildlife aircraft collisions (hereafter wildlife strikes) cause losses in terms of human lives and direct monetary losses for the aviation industry. In recent years, wildlife strikes have increased in parallel with air traffic increase and species habituation to anthropic areas. In this paper, we used an ecological...
